The three possible hyperlinks that serve a website or landing page are of 3 types:

  1. Internal links
  2. Inbound Links
  3. Outbound Links

How well you use these 3 types of links for your website or landing page goes a long way to determine the success of your website visibility in Google search results. Let me quickly explain them.

Internal Links

These are the links that lead from one page to the other within your website (the same domain). For example the menu that is usually at the top of every website. These links help your website visitors to navigate your website easily. It also helps the search engine bots to crawl your website properly. If your internal links are well laid out, they help your users to have a great user experience (UX). This keeps them longer on your website and improves your website bounce rate (bounce rate measures how much time your visitors stay on your website before they leave).

If visitors spend more time on your website, it improves your website ranking and the higher your website ranking, the higher your chances of appearing in top position when your prospects perform their search on Google and other search engines.

Inbound Links

These are those links on other people’s websites and social media platforms that direct visitors to your own website. They are your website URL which you or someone else leaves on different websites across the web.

Inbound links work in the same way as recommendations from friends and family work in real life. The more inbound links you get from high ranking websites, the more your website’s ranking and visibility in search results improves. When more websites, apps and portals are referring to and pointing to your website online, the search engine bots perceives it that your website content is useful and relevant enough and so it rewards you by ranking your website higher.

It is even believed that that getting inbound links is the single most important objective for attaining high rankings. This stems from the idea that inbound links are one of the hardest metrics to manipulate and thus, one of the best ways for search engines to determine the popularity of a given web page. This idea was first used by the early search engine Alta Vista and later improved upon by Google.

Inbound links are also called backlinks.

How do you generate backlinks?

I’ll quickly share three ways that works nicely all the time here. You will learn the rest if you sign up for our digital marketing training.

  1. Use social media. I believe you know what I mean. Go to Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, NaijaPals, everywhere on social media and open a page, a fan page, or simply an account for your business and update your profile. Include your website in the appropriate places. Even if you don’t yet receive direct sales from those platforms, by having your URL (website) published there, they help to give you backlinks which helps your website or landing page to rank higher for visibility in search engine results.
  2. Contribute to top blogs and forums and leave your URL as your signature. Mind you I did not say you should be disturbing the peace of people while they are looking for useful content. Rather, contribute intelligently to those platforms. Engage in what is called content marketing.

Action Step:

Go to Google now and make a list of all top forums and blogs in your field. Try get up to 20 of them. Register there and drop your website URL on your profile there. Then as your time will permit, make quality contributions there. They will give you nice backlinks.

  1. Register your website and landing page on all available local listing websites you can lay your hands upon. Go to Google and search for “Local listing websites in Nigeria”. Register on all of them.

Let’s now talk about

Outbound Links

These are links on your own website that direct your website visitors to other people’s websites. For instance when you are talking about something your friend is doing on her website and you place a link from your own website to that your friend’s website so that your visitor can click on it to go and see what you are talking about directly on her website. Those are outbound links.

Why should you use outbound links?

Because they help search engines understand what your website is really talking about. When these search engines can pinpoint what your website is all about, it helps increase how they rate you as relevant and this increases your chances of showing up in the top of search engine results when users search for contents related to your website. Do you get it?

So your website or landing page need outbound links a lot.

Your website links are very important for your SEO. Use the three of them effectively and watch your website or landing page push through the Google result page until it gets to page #1.

All the best.
